Frozen assets are owned by Afghanistan: Shah Mehmood Qureshi

Pakistan's Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi has said that the frozen assets belong to Afghanistan.

On Saturday, the Secretary of State commented on the US President's decision regarding the frozen assets of Afghanistan, saying that if Afghanistan was not assisted in a timely manner, the crisis there could escalate.

He said that people especially women and children could be further affected due to food shortage in Afghanistan and immediate resources should be provided to them.

"We want girls' schools and hospitals to be operational in Afghanistan. School teachers need money to pay their salaries."

The Foreign Minister said that the law and order situation in Afghanistan is much better, the problem there at present is not law and order, but livelihood.

"Economic collapse in Afghanistan is not in anyone's interest. If there is an economic collapse, we could face a massive influx of Afghan refugees. "

"The situation in Afghanistan is getting very serious, a crisis has arisen there and we all have a common responsibility to deal with it," he said.

The Foreign Minister said that an extraordinary meeting of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers held in Islamabad on December 19 had also passed a resolution that the frozen funds for assistance to Afghanistan should be released.

"However, according to the decision that has now come to light, سا 3.5 billion is being provided for humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan and سا 3.5 billion for the victims of the 9/11 attacks."

The Foreign Minister said that the people of Afghanistan are saying that this is their money and it should be left to their discretion as to where to use it.

"They need human resources at the moment, they need resources. He (Afghan) is saying that the United States can decide how to deal with the victims of Naib XI.

Shah Mehmood Qureshi added that "at the moment the world is saying that if humanitarian aid is not provided to Afghanistan in time, by 2022, most of its population will fall below the poverty line due to this crisis."
